My parents’ new hobby is to exercise and track their progress with the Apple Watch. They’re able to track calories and see how far we walked as a family.
The last few months have been hard for everyone to stay healthy, experience sunshine, and feel a sense of community. Walking (socially distant) allows my family to help feel connected with the world and keep moving.
Walking San Diego
My family lives in San Diego which has tons of attractions to walk and bike around. Some of our favorite places to walk are:
- Mission Bay / Beach (You can bike it too)
- La Jolla
- Lake Murray
- Balboa Park
The Apple Watch as our Family Coach
We were doing great as a family when it came to walking. However, we started quarantining as a response to COVID-19 and we promptly paused our outdoor activities. From February to June, my family did not walk outside and took all the safety precautions.
Recently, I got my parents Apple Watches, and we started walking again. We created a hobby and now track every calorie as a group. My parents love the Workout feature where we can track our workouts and see how much calories we burned.
Exercising has tons of benefits which include:

Our Apple Watch reminds us to complete our exercise ring before the days ends and nudges to go for a walk. It acts as our family coach and helps us stay accountable.
I currently live in the Bay Area, so I’m not always around with my family. However, the memories of walking together as a family have caused me to reconsider moving back to San Diego.
